History
The first Rolex Datejust
In 1945, Rolex introduced the pioneering Perpetual Datejust reference 4467. Although we take it for granted today, this was the first watch to display an automatically changing date complication. It featured a 36mm18k yellow gold oyster case which was previously introduced in1936. Customers were given a choice of either a five link 18k yellow gold jubilee bracelet for CHF 1,785 or two leather straps with a gold buckle for CHF 975. Initially, Rolex planned to produce only 100 pieces but extended production to meet demand, resulting in around1000 units being sold.
Evolution of the Rolex Datejust
Over the years, Rolex has continually refined and enhanced the iconic Datejust timepiece. Some of the key changes:
- 1954: Rolex introduced the Cyclops lens, a magnifying lens affixed to the crystal above the date window
- 1955: The date-change mechanism was upgraded to change instantaneously at the stroke of midnight
- 1977: In response to the quartz crisis Rolex introduced the OysterQuartz was introduced
- 2009: Datejust II was introduced featuring a larger 41mm case size compared to the traditional 36mm
- 2016: Datejust 41 was introduced further refining the design with updated proportions and a new movement
